Seaside AAUW Scholarship Recipients 2022-23
Seaside AAUW Scholarship Foundation awarded over $11,000 worth of scholarships to women of the north coast of Oregon for the coming academic year. Awards ranged from $1000 to $2000. Three of these women are continuing their college career at one of the state universities.
Melia Kapua was awarded the Cheri Folk Leadership Award and will be attending Oregon State University after two exceptional years at Clatsop Community College. She is a Warrenton High graduate and will be pursuing a degree in Public Policy and Criminal Justice. This is a onetime award in Cheri Folk’s name recognizing her contributions in our north coast communities.
Emma Taylor completed her first year of college at Southern Oregon University having received our First Generation (June Stromberg Scholarship). She had an outstanding first year, and consequently will receive a 2nd year (Helen Gronquist Scholarship) to continue her education. She is working on a Communication major, with a Psychology minor and hopes to pursue a career in Nonprofit Management.
hillary Dochow was awarded a scholarship for women returning to school after an absence. She will complete her business degree at Eastern Oregon University. She was assisting her autistic daughter get through the public-school system and then start college when she realized, that she, too, could complete a college program. She attended our WINGS conference, went to Lives in Transition program, and graduated with an Associate Business degree from Clatsop Community College. Upon learning that CCC partners with Eastern Oregon University, she decided to enroll in the Accounting program and will graduate in the spring of 2023.
Five young women from Seaside and Warrenton High Schools were awarded June Stromberg Scholarships for First Generation students:
Margaret Neuwirth will attend Clatsop Community College after graduating from Seaside where she took and received credit for a number of college credit classes. She was very active in drama as well as band.
Karina Huanosta, also a Seaside graduate, has chosen to attend Western Oregon University. It is her hope to ultimately be an elementary school teacher. Her community project her senior year was organizing a cheer camp for grades K-5 where she exhibited her strong leadership skills.
Kapricia Geil is our final Seaside graduate who expects to attend Oregon Community College in Lincoln City. It is her goal to ultimately have a career in nursing.
Tiana Marie Rehwald is a graduate of Warrenton High School where she was very active in band and chorus as well as tutored other students. She has enrolled at Western Oregon University and anticipates a future as a teacher of either music education or English.
Alejandra Lopez Nestor is attending school at Mount Holyoke College where she is majoring in Spanish, Latin American Studies and Politics. She graduated from Warrenton where she was credited with making it a more inclusive institution while promoting social justice issues.
